Early Life and Career

Born in Naha, Okinawa, Japan, on May 31, 1972, David Ray Roberts, nicknamed Doc, has carved out an impressive career in professional baseball. Roberts is a Japanese-American who grew up in San Diego, California, and excelled as a multi-sport athlete at Rancho Buena Vista High School.

MLB Career

Roberts went on to play outfield for the University of California, Los Angeles, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1994 MLB draft. He made his major league debut with the Dodgers in 1999 and played for a number of teams, including the Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, and Boston Red Sox, over the next 10 seasons.

Managing Success

After his playing career, Roberts transitioned to coaching, serving as the first base coach and outfield instructor for the Padres from 2011 to 2014. In 2015, he became the manager of the Dodgers, leading the team to six National League West division championships, two National League pennants, and a World Series appearance in 2017.
