A Deadly Storm Traps Climbers

Mount Everest: The Tragic Blizzard of 1996

A Deadly Storm Traps Climbers

In May 1996, a fast-moving storm trapped three climbing teams high on Mount Everest, leading to one of the darkest tragedies in mountaineering history. The storm claimed the lives of 12 climbers, including some of the most respected climbers in the world.

The Climbers

Among the climbers caught in the storm were Beck Weathers, an American climber who came close to dying and still surviving, and Rob Hall and Scott Fischer, two expedition leaders who died along with many of their clients.

The climbers were both highly respected and experienced, but the summit bid of the two expeditions turned into a nightmare when the storm hit.

The Blizzard

The storm struck suddenly on May 10, 1996, trapping the climbers at high altitudes. The blizzard raged for hours, creating whiteout conditions and making it impossible to see or navigate.

The climbers fought for survival, but the extreme conditions and high altitude proved too much for many.

Aftermath

The tragedy shocked the mountaineering community and led to a reassessment of the risks involved in climbing Everest. The feature film "Everest" documents the events of those two days in May 1996, when the climbers faced the deadliest storm in Everest history.
